Chapter Two - 1st Grade

What did you think of Chapter 2? Are there any mini-lessons you plan on trying or have already put into use in your classroom?

  1. I really like the concept of Tuck a Topic in your Pocket. At the beginning of the year, we make a list of things to write about that is important to us. But students that cant read have a hard time doing this. I like the idea of drawing a picture of topics and putting into envelope inside writing journal. This will be great to use in science and social studies as well. The students like to write about topics they have learned in science and social studies. I will also use the writing ideas bingo as listed on pg. 46. Once again this will give the students more options for writing and we can do this throughout the school year instead of just the beginning of year.

  2. I let students discuss what they will write about but i didnt understand how this allows students to use their "working memory" to get ideas down on paper. I have reading partners but i really like the idea of writing partners. This will make students more accountable and help me as well:) In the beginning of the year it is very hard to get students to elaborate in their writing. I like the concept of sticky dot details. First graders need visuals and this idea will work well for them. i also like the 321 graphic organizer. This will help students organize their thoughts and keep their writing organized. I cant wait to try these ideas.

  3. I really like the writing ideas Bingo and the tuck a topic in your pocket. I like the idea of the students having pictures from home or pictures from school events to write about. I was thinking we could use facebook for this...the pictures that are posted from different school events. We have the word jar in the front of our writing journal as well, but I like them being able to keep pictures in a pocket to have something to write about. I will definitely be trying the writing partners. They love working with partners and reading their stories to partners. I'm excited to see how that goes. I also like the 3-2-1 planner to help keep them on topic when they are ready to write stories with a beginning, middle, and end.
