Chapter Four - 3rd Grade

What did you think of Chapter 4? Are there any mini-lessons you plan on trying or have already put into use in your classroom?

  1. This is probably the best chapter that I've read so far. I have so many children that are still using invented spelling and they're not risk takers. While I do a lot of the things listed, it's a good refresher. I really wish we would have had the word sort when we did common and proper nouns.

  2. I really did not like the part about shortcut words. I was taught that our writing is formal and it is hard for me to change how I think about that. However, I like the lesson for grammar.

I use Silly Starters in my class every year and the kids love it. The Silly Story Template is great, it reminds me of Mad Libs and I loved those as a kid. I will use it and the Animal Report Template soon!

  3. I have quite a few students in my class that use invented spelling and over the past few weeks it has shown me a lot about how they think. I can read most of their writing because more often then not, they are spelling it exactly as it sounds. Altough it might not be the correct term, I always try to compliment them on sounding it out and using their skills to help them. I really like the ideas that the chapter give for resources that you can buy at the dollar store to help students understand spacing and the whole part relationship between letter sounds and words. Over all I really enjoyed this chapter and the minilessons. Like I've said before, I really enjoy this book and will definitely be using lessons from it on a weekly basis.

  4. Borrowing Words from the Wall is a great activity. In my classroom words on the word wall are no-excuse words just as it is in the book. Most students do not have a problem with this, however, for those that do I like the concept of helping the student hear the letters, trace the letters, and most of all take a picture of the word. I hope to use this for those students who tend to struggle with copying from the word wall to their paper. I loved the idea for Shortcuts to Words. I hope to use this next week when we review contractions.

  5. The lesson on shortcut words fits perfectly into our plans. We are working on contractions. What a great way to introduce them. I agree with Megan, wish we had seen the capital letter word sort when we were sorting common/proper nouns. Might try it as a station to review. The lesson on the parts of a sentence looks interesting also. Will probably use the lesson about being your own editor. So much useful material in this chapter.

  6. Daily kids are asking me how to spell words when they are writing. I liked Bubble Gum writing and I will refer back to it the next time a child ask me. That would me a great teaching moment for this paticular mini lesson. I thought the silly stories would be a lot of fun in third grade and I think the kids will enjoy them. I plan to try them!

  7. I have 2 favorite mini-lessons in this chapter. I think the "Tricks for Tricky Parts" is a great activity because it is forcing our kids to dig in deep, and not only identify the part of the word that is tricky, but also come up with a memorable trick to prevent repeating the same error over and over. I also like the shortcut word activity. This is a great hands-on approach for those students who are struggling with contractions.
