Chapter Five - 3rd Grade

What did you think of Chapter 5? Are there any mini-lessons you plan on trying or have already put into use in your classroom?

We've reached the final chapter! I know many of you are relieved, but I think we've all walked away with something valuable to put towards our writing lessons.

Is there anything else you think we could do to take our learning as teachers to the next level?

  1. I really like the mini-lesson about trading words. I think we might use this lesson this week on some of our previous jounal entries just to get them familiar with this kind of activity.
I think that one thing that we can do as teachers to take writing to the next level is to priortize writing into our day. Sometimes writing gets a back seat because of all of the other "stuff" we have to get done in the day, but writing is so important. I also think that continuing our research and education for writing will help too. I absolutely loved writing and really try to get a little bit in each each. We have recently started doing writers workshop and my kids BEG me to do it everyday. THEY LOVE WRITING. I have enjoyed this book and will definitely keep it handy for lessons and ideas. Great choice! :)

  2. I really like the ice cream cone rubric. I think it helps them so much to have a visual when they're trying to evaulate their writing.

  3. I feel like I am usually the one doing all the revising. I like the star and a wish. It gives the kids the responsibility. What I have noticed when I have let them revise a partners writing that they sometimes guide them in the wrong direction. I agree with one of the statements made by another teacher that sometimes we don't give the attention we need to toward writing.

  4. Revising is such a challenging skill to develop with any stident. I think I will use the "Pushing In" mini-lesson and the "Trading Words" activity, too. I already have some students who would even be prepared to progress to the step of trading phrases. There were many lessons within this book that will be very beneficial to my students.

  5. I personally revise as I go, so that is a strategy that I am good at teaching. I really like the cut and paste idea for students because they tend to write whatever comes to mind in any order. The ice cream rubric is something that I would use for grading.

  6. There are many lessons in this chapter I would like to use to help our students learn how to revise and edit their work. I would like to use the "Pushing In" to help add details to their writing and the "Trading Words" to help them think of synonyms to make their writing even more interesting. I love the "Exploding the Moment," with Barry Lane. I have used this technique for quite a few years. My students have always liked this. He actually has a web site and video of how to help with this process if anyone is interested. It is amazing. I think the "Cutting and Sorting" lesson should be used to help those students who have a hard time putting their ideas in sequence. I would use this for a one on one conference with those students who have difficulty in this area. I hope to use the "Ice-Cream Cone Rubric" along with the "A Star and a Wish" lesson to help my students see writing from another persons point of view, as well, as to build their confidence as writers. There is always room to grow when it comes to writing. We are all life-long learners! I believe all students should be engaged in some sort of writing every day.
