Some 1st graders like to have run on sentences connecting them all with "and", and they just keep going with only 1 period at the end of the story. In my experience, it's been difficult getting those writers to stop and punctuate properly. I would like another approach on this. Maybe a few more different ideas to get these students to grasp the concept of punctuating the sentences properly. The minilesson in the book is something I already do.
There are many good ideas in chapter four but I already use most of these. I like the "silly stories". I think my class will enjoy doing this. I will also use the Be your Own Editor. First grade needs a lot of modeling and we will use this as our guideline.
I agree with Sallie. I like the silly stories. Something I don't do enough of is praise their conventional spelling. I also like the tips for using the word wall. They still need to be explicitly taught how to look at a word on the wall/board and copy the word onto their paper. Some can "take pictures" of the words better than others.
